Town Hall visit

I had arranged to meet a few people at the town Hall in Vrysses to show them where to register to be able to vote in the next local and European elections in May. I was not really needed, except for reassurance, as the procedure is simple. While I was there I did a few other jobs, chasing some paperwork for someone that had gone astray, speaking to Kep about to get some information for others, trying to find out the latest updates on the voting procedure for the elections and reporting a light on the road that had been out for several months. I met friends who had brought  large items of refuse to the department and recyclable items to go in the appropriate bins.
While I was there I also had conversations with three of the prospective Mayoral candidates - more on that later!
One of the important issues today was the imminent dismissal of 35 workers from the municipality. These are not only short contract workers but include workers who have been there for 10 years or more. Both sides of the council chamber are battling to reduce these numbers as it will be very difficult for the council to function with the loss of so many workers. These include electricians, plumbers. maintenance workers and administration staff. I discovered one person today bring to cover the jobs of several people. With so many of the maintenance staff going this does not bode well for water leaks, roads, rubbish collection etc. There may be an emergency meeting of the council over the next few days when some possible solutions have been found.

  1. Have the Council considered job share schemes ? That way 2 people can still be employed on a half salary rather than 1 on nothing and the other totally stressed out !! That way the job still gets done and this maybe just a short term solution until things improve .
