Georgioupolis harbour development

As promised, here is the sketch of the plans for the harbour recreational area. 
(I know the picture overlaps the sides a little but if it is smaller it is difficult to see the details!)


This includes a skateboard area, a playground with athletic facilities, a sitting area and parking for 76 cars. Also there is to be a community building with public toilets - a gift from Mr Papadakis a former mayor of Georgioupolis



In the meanwhile work is also continuing apace in the square. 
Here you can see the large water feature taking shape.



I had a busy day in the town hall chasing paperwork and various information for people and helping a few more get registered to vote.
There is also a new Environmental group newsletter on the site

    Spoke to Stelios last week and the cantena has had to go. He was not sure what he was going to do. But knowing him I am sure he will come up with something.

    The cantina was an important part of our holidays. I hope the family find another business. What a shame for them. I am so pleased that we had many happy years having all our holidays in GP. We saw it before all the seafront development. What a wonderful place it was. We no longer holiday there, for us they ruined it with the promenade. After the latest developments it will be completely ruined for people like us. I prefer to remember our wonderful Georgioupolis as it was.

      I agree.I loved GP as it was. I will be coming back maybe for the last time this May. I just hope McDonalds never get a foot hold there

The council continues to choose its officers and the committees have been chosen for finance and also what is called the "Quality of life committee" which deals with planning, environmental issues, licenses, parks and cemeteries amongst other things. I think they will be kept pretty busy! Last night I was at a wedding - more of that tomorrow and tonight I am off to a play being produced in Vamos. "And ever More Shall Be So" By Norman Robbins. I see once again that television is re running the series " A Place In Greece" which featured Brian Saunders and Andrew Stewart Sutton along with their friends Les and Pete and their adventures buying a property here in Crete and their life here in Apokoronas. Love them or hate them it was good entertainment as long as it was not taken too seriously. What happened after the series ended? They are now back in the UK. The Old Bakery at Georgioupolis ( and more work in the square!)

The best bread in Crete, in my opinion, is that from the old wood fired bakery in Georgioupolis. I happened to call by as they were firing up for a fresh batch of bread I bought a hot loaf just out of the oven. The Georgioupolis bread is famous all over Greece and is taken to Athens. It has very good keeping qualities. Greek people from all over the island come to get bread here and is is expected for locals to take a few loaves if they are visiting other areas. Some paximadi too ( twice baked hard rusk) Andonis mopping out the hot oven with a damp cloth. Work continues in the square Paving is beginning to be laid There are ramps for access on each side of the square Meanwhile, down on the seafront…..
