Update your wardrobe - and help the needy at the same time!

Image
Summer is here and I realised that I only had about one decent t shirt to my name! What to do? I needed several tops in different colours. I then remembered that the Social Supermarket clothes store in Nippos is open every Tuesday and clothes can be bought at extremely good prices with the money going to the Social supermarket. How does it work? Clothes are donated. A team of volunteers sort, wash, press them. Firstly clothes are given to those in need of clothes. Some go to the shop in Kalyves, some are given to the Red Cross and other charities The rest are in the shop and are available for anyone to come along and buy. All proceeds then go to the social supermarket. A win, win situation Why not go along next Tuesday 10 -12 and update your summer wardrobe? Another way to update your wardrobe this week: TH E  GREAT CHARITY  SECOND-HAND CLOTHES SALE     SATURDAY  6 th May 10.30am-3pm The Newbery

Good Friday

Image
An important part of the Easter celebrations is one that many visitors miss. The decorating of the church and Bier for the Good Friday services. I visited several churches Where the ladies of the villages and the children had gathered flowers and were preparing for the service. Firstly Xirosterni Then Souri Kalamitsi Amigdali Exopoli During the service the Bier is carried around the village and visits the graveyard where the graves are blessed before returning to the church and the congregation passing underneath the Bier which is held aloft at the church door. This is said to be good luck. Don't miss it next year!

Improvements to the national highway from Georgioupolis to Petres

Image
All of us who live in this part of Crete know that the national highway between Georgioupolis and Rethymnon is the site of many accidents each year, often involving pedestrians. I myself personally knew two local people, one killed and one with "life changing injuries" who were injured whilst crossing the road from Mathes to Georgioupolis at the junction. (and think of all the tourists catching buses) It has been announced that next year (2018) the development for upgrading the road network and safer pedestrian movement on the national highway from Georgioupolis to the border with Rethymnon is expected to take place.  5 bridges and 4 subways are due to be constructed and three interchanges. The project, with a budget of EUR 11.5 million is part of the budget for road safety of the region of Crete (not from the local council's budget) and aims to reduce road accidents occurring in the region. Georgioupolis Children's Carnival

Image
Kicking off the Carnival season again. Today was the Children's Carnival at Georgioupolis, ahead of the bigger carnivals in Kalyves, Rethymnon Souda and other towns and villages next week. We were lucky with the weather, after a couple of very bad weeks the day was warm, but not too hot. The children parade around the village Amazing the costumes that can be made from bin liners and a little imagination! The souvlaki stall was soon up and cooking! Crazy foam wars! Zin Zan, the clown entertained the children Along with "Peanut" and the "Pocket Circus" A good time was to be had fishing empty cans out of the fountain with a stick! The prizes for the costumes were awarded "Kai tou xronou" ( and to next year)
