Kalyves

I know that many of you like to see progress reports from Georgioupolis, but let's not forget the other parts of Apokoronas.
This morning I was at Kalyves in the early morning. The sea was calm, the beach quiet, the sun warm (20 degrees at 8.45 a.m.) and the roads quiet.

Unfortunately the area near the seafront which serves as a car park shows some of the work that needs to be done.

No major works have taken place in Kalyves in recent years and the infrastructure is failing.
Money needs to be spent on the sewage system which is not working as it should, and the hoteliers are planning a meeting to discuss ways of filling the rooms available.

There are plans for the construction of a marina to encourage tourists with boats to visit the area. The blue flag beaches could be extended.

A more controversial, but interesting, idea is for the new aquaplane routes, planned to link the small islands together, with bases at Souda, Rethymnon and Heraklion could also have a base somewhere in Apokoronas such as  Kalyves, Almyrida or even Georgioupolis.

Early morning it was quiet, but the road system needs to be looked at as we all know the problems of trying to drive through on a busy day.  Parking needs to be forbidden - other than loading and unloading of course - and perhaps a one way system using the parallel roads?

Another area used as a car park which needs surfacing and marking out.

Someone's Poinsettia did not die after Christmas and is now a tree!

I also found this handsome bird in Kalyves

Let's hope it is a symbol of a Phoenix rising from the ashes and a sign of future regeneration in the area.
