A Blog for Lent. Apokrias.


This year I thought I would share Lent with you and what happens here on Crete. It will be a strange year because due to the threat of Coronavirus all carnivals and carnival related events have been cancelled over the country.

 Friday 28th February,
The children had their carnival parties at school.
They all arrived at the school bus dressed in their costumes. Nearly all the girls were in princess outfits the boys varied from superheros and ancient black garbed crones to an axe murderer complete with plastic cleaver. ( A couple of years ago one was a chainsaw murderer complete with plastic chainsaw!) to balance things out there are always several dressed up as policemen. The most original this year was the boy dressed as a souvlaki gyro - a brilliant costume involving cardboard as the pitta bread and yellow foam 'chips"

Saturday 29th Feb
 We had a trip to Rethymnon and a wander around the town.
We stopped at Birakis for lunch. (take the Spili turning from the highway and it is just a short way up the road overlooking the town


The cafe is popular with the University students and today our menu arrived on a tablet!


At least you can make the text bigger if -like us- you have forgotten your specs!


The place was decorated for Apokrias celebrations


There is a great view over the town, fort and harbour


We shared a Chicken Pansenella which came with a salad of mixed leaves, sundried tomatoes and mozzarella  - delicious


There is also the option of the usual cafe takeaways - pies, sandwiches, cakes etc

Brian and Andrew

The council continues to choose its officers and the committees have been chosen for finance and also what is called the "Quality of life committee" which deals with planning, environmental issues, licenses, parks and cemeteries amongst other things. I think they will be kept pretty busy! Last night I was at a wedding - more of that tomorrow and tonight I am off to a play being produced in Vamos. "And ever More Shall Be So" By Norman Robbins. I see once again that television is re running the series " A Place In Greece" which featured Brian Saunders and Andrew Stewart Sutton along with their friends Les and Pete and their adventures buying a property here in Crete and their life here in Apokoronas. Love them or hate them it was good entertainment as long as it was not taken too seriously. What happened after the series ended? They are now back in the UK. The Old Bakery at Georgioupolis ( and more work in the square!)

The best bread in Crete, in my opinion, is that from the old wood fired bakery in Georgioupolis. I happened to call by as they were firing up for a fresh batch of bread I bought a hot loaf just out of the oven. The Georgioupolis bread is famous all over Greece and is taken to Athens. It has very good keeping qualities. Greek people from all over the island come to get bread here and is is expected for locals to take a few loaves if they are visiting other areas. Some paximadi too ( twice baked hard rusk) Andonis mopping out the hot oven with a damp cloth. Work continues in the square Paving is beginning to be laid There are ramps for access on each side of the square Meanwhile, down on the seafront…..
