Helping the Social Supermarket

As many of you know the Social Supermarket of Apokoronas is supporting many families in the area. This week, once again, monthly bags were packed for the 370 needy families which contained basic items such as rice, milk, flour, sugar and pulses. There are also about 15 families who need to be supported on a daily or weekly basis.

It all looks good and many thanks to the volunteers and those of you who support the good work with donations of money and foodstuffs…. but wait...

These are the shelves after the bags are packed. Then the effort to raise money to buy food starts again. Sometimes the gap is longer than a month as there is not enough in the store.

The Periferia ( the overall council of Crete) helps from time to time with cheese, meat and so on but this is not every month and often there are not enough of the extras to share between all the recipients, so it is divided between the most needy and the rest have to go without. Many groups and individuals hold fundraisers and donate money, but it is a drop in the ocean and with the crisis biting harder the need is becoming greater. What can you do to help?

As well as dropping items in the baskets in your local supermarkets you can join the "Feed a Family" initiative.

1. By making a monthly donation of 10 euros to the Social Services Bank account you can make a big difference.

This account cannot be accessed by any other department of the council and when removing money from the account the councillors in charge have to take the invoices from the shops providing the goods and they are paid direct. 

If you wish to send larger amounts the social supermarket can provide receipts with which you can claim tax relief in many countries.
