The little church on the causeway

Many people walk aver the causeway at Georgioupolis to the little church of St Nicholas, but how many people know anything about it?

It was built by Miltiadis Papadogiannis, the first "mayor" of Georgioupolis in the late 1880's

The village of Georgioupolis was originally called Paleocastella ( old castle) and then later "Almyroupolis" after the river, only in 1889 becoming Georgioupolis, after a visit from Prince George.

The church is dedicated to the fishermen and sailors

It celebrates on 6th December

Miltiadis Papadogiannis asked in his will to be buried on the island of St Nicholas - I don't know if that happened so I will try to find out.
