Water and water bottles!

Like many of you, over the last couple of weeks our village has been suffering from water shortages. In our area it was due to faults and broken pipes as well as greater demand die to the influx of holiday makers and Athenian visitors! In our village, as the houses are older, most do not have extra water tanks so when the water is off it is off. During one of the times we had water I filled a bottle from the tap to make sure we had some later. However, seeing the bottle next to an unopened bottle we were shocked at the colour! I do not think we will be using it!



Thank you to everyone who has been saving their bottled tops. I delivered several bagfuls to the Kalyves town hall this morning. There are tops in the box too! These are being collected to provide a wheelchair for a child in Chania.

    Maybe if the locals stopped washing the roads there'd be a more plentiful supply, in our village thousands of litres of water are wasted every day by businesses and villagers just hosing down

    I agree with the previous comment, it's the same where we are, so much water is just wasted by people who don't understand what a waste it is

    I agree. though the main problem in our area is not lack of water, it is lack of infrastructure.

The council continues to choose its officers and the committees have been chosen for finance and also what is called the "Quality of life committee" which deals with planning, environmental issues, licenses, parks and cemeteries amongst other things. The Old Bakery at Georgioupolis ( and more work in the square!)

The best bread in Crete, in my opinion, is that from the old wood fired bakery in Georgioupolis. I happened to call by as they were firing up for a fresh batch of bread I bought a hot loaf just out of the oven. The Georgioupolis bread is famous all over Greece and is taken to Athens. It has very good keeping qualities. Greek people from all over the island come to get bread here and is is expected for locals to take a few loaves if they are visiting other areas. Some paximadi too ( twice baked hard rusk) Andonis mopping out the hot oven with a damp cloth.
