Exploring Argyromouri

Argyromouri used to be a thriving village. It was possible there during Minoan times - When the settlement of Amphimala was in the area now covered by Georgioupolis. During Turkish times it was bombarded by a canon set across the hill at Exopoli. Before the war there were 70+ families living here but now there is barely one. There are many stories and legends. The name means "Silver Head" and there was a mint making coins. Legend says that treasure was hidden during the war - it has not been found. Nor have the "Silver Pigs" which were hidden down a well - not for want of searching!
The Church of St George has many stories - that needs to be saved for another time.

The remains of the oil press

In Turkish times there was a "Fabbrika" a type of factory.

Those darn plastic bags get everywhere!

On the far side of the village there is a gorge leading down towards Georgioupolis and from this side of the village you can see across Almyros bay to the beaches of Georgioupolis and Kavros
