Selia Panagyri

Image
Every year the village of Selia in Apokoronas holds a village celebration. This year they particularly wanted to embrace and honour the non Greek families who have moved to the villages of Selia, Likotinera and Souri. They did this with a certificate.  There was a Greek band and traditional music. The Bishop of Hania, Damaskinos, opened the proceedings Mr Giannis Stavianoudakis Had written a very moving address to the company All the village was there! I was asked to read out Giannis' speech in English. The mayor Mr Markakis says a few words He gave an honor to a villager for his work over the years The mayor elect, Mr. Koukianakis says a few words The children came to dance in traditional costume. The Archbishop of Crete Eirinaos visited as he does every year and spoke. We were invited to dance with the Syllogos  The moon was full and it was cool under the trees. A lovely even

Water and water bottles!

Image
Like many of you, over the last couple of weeks our village has been suffering from water shortages. In our area it was due to faults and broken pipes as well as greater demand die to the influx of holiday makers and Athenian visitors! In our village, as the houses are older, most do not have extra water tanks so when the water is off it is off. During one of the times we had water I filled a bottle from the tap to make sure we had some later. However, seeing the bottle next to an unopened bottle we were shocked at the colour! I do not think we will be using it! Thank you to everyone who has been saving their bottled tops. I delivered several bagfuls to the Kalyves town hall this morning. There are tops in the box too! These are being collected to provide a wheelchair for a child in Chania.

Random tarmac

Image
Over the last few days in several villages some of the potholes have been filled Unfortunately it seems random Fill two, miss one, fill three, miss two! The worst spot seems to be outside Kefalas, it has already been ascertained that the whole road needs to be completely re built - not just holes filled in or a layer of tarmac over the lot The village representative - soon to be councillor -Stavros Stavroulakis, has been in discussions with the prefecture and the governor of Crete and has their promise to rebuild the road properly Meanwhile a few less pot holes - even if temporary must be a good thing as it was very dangerous A splurge of tar has been put to cover the worst of the ravine when you turn right coming into Georgioupolis from Vamos direction - again it looks very temporary.
