St Georges day and the Blessing of the Sheep.

Image
Well, time has rather runaway with me this week and I have not had time to post. I have lots of photos from Easter but decided that it would be nice to post some from today at the "Blessing of the Sheep" at Argyroumouri ( Just up the mountain from Georgioupolis) The day was warm but cloudy and the flag was flying proudly  The sheep were gathered next to the church The service began I was rather taken by some of the vases - they appeared to be large brass shells from some sort of  large firearm The priests blessed the Artos The bells rang The sheep waited patiently People continued to arrive, including Pavlos in Cretan costume Thrice around the church one of the priests blesses the sheep with holy water The two priests prepare for the sheep to run under their raiments Here we go! As the service finished the sun came out from behind the clouds and it turned into a very hot da

E.M.A.A.K. Policies and programme announced for the local elections.

Image
On Saturday evening Mr Koukianakis announced his programme for the next five years and kicked off his election campaign. As you can see the room was full, and indeed people were listening outside in the hall and on the stairs. Many candidates and members of the public were present, as were representatives of the media. Some of you have been wondering what the name E.M.A.A.K stands for In English it is "The United, Independent, Fighting, Movement of Apokoronas." United- because we all need to work together. Independent - we are a coalition of parties not aligned to just one. Fighting - we must fight for the future of Apokoronas and it's residents.

Kalyves and tourism ( and a few pics of Georgioupoli too!)

Image
On Tuesday afternoon I attended a meeting in Kalyves organized by the local hoteliers association. The discussion was how to get Kalyves back on the map as tourism has been dropping. The hotel and room owners had a chance to put their point of view to representatives from the tourist industry and the Chania chamber of Commerce It was decided the first steps were to  1. Make sure as many businesses as possible were in the Chamber of commerce catalogue  2. Construct a website advertising and informing about Kalyves and what is available 3. Encourage the use of booking.com and trip advisor There will be another meeting soon to look at the next things that need to be done. Now, for those who need their daily "fix" of Georgioupolis… Flowers have been planted in the square Work goes on at the sea front - still a long way to go Tourists were walking out to St Nicholas church

A big thank you to everyone who supported the Car Boot Fair at Almyrida today. The table money went to" Xeira Voithias"   "Helping Hands" - I do not know yet how much was raised. There were more than 60 stalls, many of them supporting different charities. We arrived with an empty table and a couple of posters We had many, many donations. We sold some of the household goods, decorative items and ladies clothes At the end of the morning, we had collected a lot! 20 large bags of blankets and men's clothes went off to the Red Cross for their appeal to help the immigrants that were rescued from a boat and are currently in Souda. Another 20 odd bags of clothes, shoes and bags waiting to be distributed to Agia Sofia and the other local charities. Argyro helping to move the bags We also collected, A bag of dried goods for Helping hands A bag of medication ( to go in the collecti

The first tourists have arrived in Georgioupolis. The first hotels opened and some of the bars and tavernas. What will they find? Well the Plateia is coming on A traffic island? The concrete surrounds are being painted white - Sunglasses were needed to protect eyes from the glare! Work goes on We have a chinese shop! Down the road though it is not looking quite so ready! On the seafront work continues. Difficult to find anywhere to park - and it is not summer yet! A coach discharges its passengers on the bridge Still a lot of work to do, only three weeks to Easter! The season is starting early this year.
