St Georges day and the Blessing of the Sheep.

Well, time has rather runaway with me this week and I have not had time to post.
I have lots of photos from Easter but decided that it would be nice to post some from today at the "Blessing of the Sheep" at Argyroumouri ( Just up the mountain from Georgioupolis)

The day was warm but cloudy and the flag was flying proudly

The sheep were gathered next to the church

The service began

I was rather taken by some of the vases - they appeared to be large brass shells from some sort of  large firearm

The priests blessed the Artos

The bells rang

The sheep waited patiently

People continued to arrive, including Pavlos in Cretan costume

Thrice around the church

one of the priests blesses the sheep with holy water

The two priests prepare for the sheep to run under their raiments

Here we go!

As the service finished the sun came out from behind the clouds and it turned into a very hot day.
There was meat, pilaffi, cheese, wine and much more provided by the villagers. Some of them will carry on the celebration into the night!!!
