All of us who live in this part of Crete know that the national highway between Georgioupolis and Rethymnon is the site of many accidents each year, often involving pedestrians. I myself personally knew two local people, one killed and one with "life changing injuries" who were injured whilst crossing the road from Mathes to Georgioupolis at the junction. (and think of all the tourists catching buses) It has been announced that next year (2018) the development for upgrading the road network and safer pedestrian movement on the national highway from Georgioupolis to the border with Rethymnon is expected to take place. 5 bridges and 4 subways are due to be constructed and three interchanges. The project, with a budget of EUR 11.5 million is part of the budget for road safety of the region of Crete (not from the local council's budget) and aims to reduce road accidents occurring in the region.
