The New Social Supermarket of Apokoronas

On Tuesday 2tth January the New "Social Supermarket" was inaugurated at Nippos
Many volunteers helped in the setting up, both in raising funds, donating food, helping to stack the shelves and packing this month's bags.

First job was to clean all the shelves, empty boxes and stack the goods






People begin to gather for the ceremony



Pavlos Polakis, MP. Eva Vagionaki, MP. Apostolos Voulgarakis Dept Governor Crete. Haralambos Koukianakis Mayor. 


In his speech the Mayor thanked the Europeans who had set a firm foundation over the last three years in building the food bank and distributing bags. He also mentioned the opening of another social supermarket in the Kalyves area, the new social frontisterio and the setting up of a social pharmacy.
The two new MP's ( SYRIZA) spoke of their plans to improve daily life so that in the future these things would not be needed.

The following day the hard work continues

Argyro Benaki ( President of social welfare) and Niki Vrionaki ( Deputy) plan what needs to go in to each bag



The volunteers pack the bags for distribution




More than 350 families will get a bag of dried goods ( Rice, pasta, pulses, milk, flour, sugar, salt etc) and one bag of fruit and vegetables ( potatoes, apples, oranges, pears, quince etc)




By the end of the packing the shelves were once again empty!


The work to refill them starts immediately

The council continues to choose its officers and the committees have been chosen for finance and also what is called the "Quality of life committee" which deals with planning, environmental issues, licenses, parks and cemeteries amongst other things. I see once again that television is re running the series " A Place In Greece" which featured Brian Saunders and Andrew Stewart Sutton along with their friends Les and Pete and their adventures buying a property here in Crete and their life here in Apokoronas. Love them or hate them it was good entertainment as long as it was not taken too seriously. What happened after the series ended? They are now back in the UK. The Old Bakery at Georgioupolis ( and more work in the square!)

The best bread in Crete, in my opinion, is that from the old wood fired bakery in Georgioupolis. I happened to call by as they were firing up for a fresh batch of bread I bought a hot loaf just out of the oven. The Georgioupolis bread is famous all over Greece and is taken to Athens. It has very good keeping qualities. Greek people from all over the island come to get bread here and is is expected for locals to take a few loaves if they are visiting other areas. Some paximadi too ( twice baked hard rusk) Andonis mopping out the hot oven with a damp cloth. Work continues in the square Paving is beginning to be laid There are ramps for access on each side of the square Meanwhile, down on the seafront…..
