The Old Neighbourhood

Image
Wandering around the villages it is fascinating to see the old houses and archways standing proud amongst the ruins. I often wonder how the village was in the past and wish I could see it at its height. One village near me has about 6 residents now, yet in the war 146 men were sent to the army. There was also  and olive mill and a "factory", not to mention that further back there was believed to be a mint making silver coins. Where are all those families now? Nature takes over Wonderful stonework A shady nook Some of the properties were large and must have belonged to monied families. Oil and wine "barrels" still in the cellar. Entrances …and exits Cob walls Walls are falling but the arches stand strong and proud against the blue sky. Huge beams made from tree trunks

Inauguration of the New Ambulance Station at Kavros

Image
The new ambulance station at Kavros ( at the old town hall building) was officially opened at the weekend. This will be a great service to the community  - especially as there are many hotels in the area and the long beach, not to mention the strip of the national highway. Many thanks to councillor Giannis Koukourakis for the photographs. Emergency numbers: 166  -  Ambulance 199  -  Fire Brigade 112 -  Police 24-hour Emergency Number (in English, French, Greek) 108  -  Coast Guard

Peaches, peaches all the way!

Image
On Monday 20 tonnes of peaches were delivered to the Apokoronas town hall from the Agricultural Co operative of Naoussa. Naoussa is famous for its tasty peaches and other soft fruits. The fruit was given free of charge to anyone who wished to help themselves. Village representatives filled up trucks with trays of peaches to take back to their villages for those people who were unable to visit the town hall. Delicious There will be a lot of peach jam, and possibly peach liqueurs made in the area this week I think. Many thanks to the farmers of Naoussa for sharing their bounty!
