Sorting the clothes!

Today a group of willing volunteers met in the basement of Vrysses town hall to tackle the big pile of clothes that have been donated to the social welfare department over the lat few months. Until now this has not been organized so a start was needed. Bags of donations Men's, women's, children's. Small, medium, large More bags arrived as the sorting was going on. Many hands make light work. Sorted and labelled ready for those in need Hmmm "Large Men" ????? The next step is distribution. this will be done with the help of Social services, "Help in the home", local priests, women's groups and local representatives. This will be an ongoing work, sorting, laundering etc. Anybody who would like to get involved please contact us: info@apokoronasourhome.com  A big Thank you to today's workers.

Blue Flags and Green Keys

The environment and tourism are two very important issues in Apokoronas. How can they work together in a sustainable way encouraging tourism whilst not destroying the very things visitors come to enjoy? Over the last few days there have been two important international conferences in Western Crete, the National Operator's Meeting for the Blue Flag - held in Chania, and the National Operator's Meeting for the "Green Key. In both cases there were delegates from 50 countries. Most of you will know about Blue Flag beaches as we have several in Apokoronas and are working towards more. I was pleased to present at the opening meetings of both. Mrs. Perraki, deputy mayor in charge of cultural activities in Hania. Former Mayor Mr. Skoulakis. Helping the nursery schools

After the very successful concert on the 7 th September at Embrosneros, Apokoronas Friends of the Red Cross set aside 750 euros for support in Apokoronas. They were asked to help provide equipment for the three Nursery schools which the Dimos of Apokoronas has responsibility for, Maza, Mouri and Armenoi. A shopping list was provided by the Nursery Schools and when all the equipment was purchased it was delivered to the schools. Argyro Benaki the President of Social Welfare for Apokoronas, along with her Vice President Niki Vrionaki -Niolaki - and a member of the social welfare board Nikitas Paizis went along with members of the ex pat community who live close to the schools.  At Armenoi Honor and Bart Bartley handed over the equipment with Argyro, Nicki and Nikita from the Social Welfare Committee of the Dimos At Mouri Jacq Vonk and Brigita Kristel met the teachers and handed over the equipment At Maza Alexandria and Chris Painter saw the children ...
